“Rocks, Peggy’s Cove” (Nova Scotia),’’ by George Pepper (1903-1962), in the show “Art in the Atlantic Northeast, 1890-1940,’’ at the Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockland,Maine, May 1-Sept. 6, 2027.
The museum explains:
“‘Layered Terrain’ will be the first exhibition in the United States to examine Atlantic Canada’s significance for American artists in the early twentieth century. At its center are the diverse ways U.S. artists, specifically those with ties to Maine, pictured the region’s terrain, while highlighting how artists crossed, imagined, and worked at the borders. The themes of the exhibition are landscapes of a ‘wild North’; tourist-scapes of coastal towns and fishing harbors; industrial prospects of fishing, lumber, and mining; and sporting landscapes of fishing and hunting. These topics, visible in paintings, prints, and printed ephemera such as maps, tourist brochures, and books, will be driven by cross-cultural conversations between U.S. artists and contemporaneous Canadian and Indigenous artists living and working in the region.’’
