So near and yet so far

An item in my Oct. 25 GoLocalProv.com column referencing Brian L. Porto’s new book, Twin States, Different Paths, on how New Hampshire and Vermont have developed so differently as neighbors caught the eye of my friend John O. Harney, the now-retired editor of  "The New England Journal of Higher Education (NEJHE)" and occasional contributor to New England Diary.

John and I have long shared a fascination with the nuances and contradictions of New England's culture and economy. Plus, John is always trying to preserve the good work of NEJHE and Connection, which he edited from 1989 until his retirement (and the journal's disappearance), in 2023. So he shared this short piece on the N.H.-VT. differences that the journal first ran in 2008 and John reprised in his blog on May 13, 2011.

Here it is. Good reading!
