From Larry Pollans’s show “Threshing,’’ at Boston Sculptors Gallery, through Nov. 1.
The gallery says:
“The exhibition features an eclectic mix of polychrome sculptures fashioned in wood, as well as drawings on plywood, masonite, slate, and steel. Toggling between the dimensions, figure versus ground, and the natural versus the decorative, Pollans offers engaging compositions in which figures, birds, and the intertwining of limbs are the focus. The sculptural works in ‘Threshing’ begin with drawing on bare wood, then cutting away, as well as adding pieces, to create open-ended narratives. Finally, Pollans adds acrylic paint and wax to provide color, most often in subtle tertiary tones. The result is exuberant movement and rhythm contained in a compact space. Pollans’ work belies traces of his myriad influences, ranging from illuminated manuscripts to postmodernism, and spanning from the natural world to the mythical.’’
